We are looking to fill a variety of temporary seasonal roles to help us through our busy festive period from late November through to the end of December. If you’ve ever thought you might like to give becoming a cheesemonger a try, this is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of British and Irish Farmhouse cheese. Below is a short piece from Niall, a former Christmas cheesemonger.

When I moved to London from Canada the first thing I did was apply for a job at Neal’s Yard Dairy as a Christmas temp. I had some experience selling cheese, but it was nothing compared to what I have learned at Neal’s Yard Dairy. I spent my first busy Christmas in the Covent Garden shop, and was lucky enough to stay on as a full- time cheesemonger.

I also got the chance to work for a few weeks in the maturing rooms in Bermondsey, where I absorbed as much as I could about maturing and caring for cheese. After about eight months as a cheesemonger I joined the Mail Order department, and during my second Christmas with the company I was overseeing the shop collections. I was glad of the chance to take on a completely new challenge, which eventually led to me managing the redesign of the online shop and company website.

In two short years I learned more than I ever thought I could about cheese and also about project management, web design and online retail. Last Spring I moved back to Canada. My time at Neal’s Yard Dairy has given me a life long love of cheese. I am continuing my career in the field, now working as cheese specialist for Wildly Delicious Fine Foods.

If you’d like to know more about the work that we do, check out this film. It follows three British farmhouse cheeses from grass roots to our shop counter.
