Behind The Slate - Workshop & Tasting

In this unique workshop you will get an insight into the life of a Cheesemonger and a taste for their skills. You will meet in the warehouse above our Borough market shop for an introduction to Neal's Yard Dairy and the building. You will don the cheesemonger uniform and head for "the slate". 


You will be guided by our speaker Fiona: demonstrations in cutting and wrapping a variety of cheeses will follow and then you will be invited to cut and wrap your own selection of cheeses. Our speaker and cheesemonger will guide you in this process. The class will end around the table with an informal tasting and introduction to Fiona's favourite cheeses accompanied by a selection of wines and beers. You will take home a selection box of 3 cheeses, which you have cut, wrapped and packaged yourself.

Please note: as you will be handling food it is essential that no jewellery is worn (rings, ear rings, chains and watches must be removed). Please ensure you remove any nail varnish and avoid wearing perfume and aftershave. If you have long hair, please bring a hair tie. It can be chilly in our shop so please bring an extra non-fluffy layer to ensure your comfort. Please note that the class is a hands on session and you will be standing for most of the class in wellingtons. Please also note, that whilst our mongers will support and demonstrate all the tasks, some physical work on your part will be included.

Veteran Cheesemonger Fiona joined the team at Christmas in 2009. Her passion for excellent service and standards means she coaches and leads new team members during Christmas. Her warm and welcoming nature make her an engaging speaker. Her depth of knowledge and skill for mongering is impressive and she wants to encourage interaction between cheesemongers and customers: generating a trust in local food experts. After 15 years working in the national media as an Information Manager, Fiona decided to follow her heart and dedicate her time to working with food. In her spare time she has also embarked on social media food projects, food styling and creating and adapting her own menus.
