L’Ancestral - 2016

Matthias and Camille make this wine with Cabernet Franc from 45 year old vines planted in Perigord. It spends 2 years in barrel before bottling. This is a rich and warming wine, reminiscent of those from neighbouring Bordeaux but with its own, distinct character. Inky dark colours, dense cassis aromas and a rich palate balanced by delicate green tannins make this a perfect wine for this time of year.

Mathias and Camille are a young couple whose winemaking is beyond their years. They took over a 17 hectare estate from Mathias’s parents in 2008 and immediately started to work the vines organically and reduced the size to 10 hectares. In 2010 they started working with Biodynamics. Their vines are planted on a plateau of limestone and clay and two hills – one of limestone and clay with a fine topsoil and the other limestone and flint. Sauvignon Blanc and Gris, Ugni blanc, Semillon for white and Merlot and Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon for red; their wines are reminiscent of the classic wines of Bordeaux and the South-West but are full of their own personality.
