Women In Cheese

4.00-5:30 pm.

To mark the occasion of International Women's Day Miranda will host this special edition class. She will select cheeses made by women or influenced by women. Miranda will explain the role women have played historically in developing the traditional cheeses we are so fond of today, how women have worked together to create profitable farmhouse businesses and how women continue to evolve this work to create truly delicious cheeses and a feminine way of work and life.

The session will involve tasting different profiles of cheese from the really young and fresh up to some of our most mature cheeses, touching on the different styles, milks and techniques involved in making them. The making of farmhouse cheese and how the timings of this were often configured around domestic life will be discussed, as well as the development of the role of women on the farm during industrialisation. Miranda will expand on the links between these foundations and the approaches of modern day female cheesemakers.

You'll be given a tasting sheet with room to make notes, as well as suggested pairings to guide you as you explore which combinations you best enjoy. At the end of the session there will be the opportunity to buy cheese from the afternoon's selection to take home. Attendees will be offered a 10% discount on all purchases made on the day, as well as a 10% discount in our online shop valid for one month.

This tasting is designed to serve as a light meal and includes bread, crackers and accompaniments. There will be samples of wines and beer provided to give you an introduction to pairing cheese with beverages. As alcohol is served, all attendees must be over 18 years of age.

Miranda has worked at Neal's Yard Dairy for 3 years and is now the manager of our Covent Garden shop.  Miranda is passionate about the work she does and has a great skill in engaging with our customers and sharing her stories and experiences. Miranda has initiated a project at Neal's Yard Dairy to create and share online posts and blogs about female cheese makers and to essentially publish this untold history. Here she will share some of these stories.
