A Little History of British Cheese

7:00-9:00 pm.

The British cheese industry has undergone momentous changes during the last 250 years. This class seeks to sort the fact from the fiction by looking at three distinct eras in the development of British cheese: the artisanal era, the scientific era, and the continental era.

Our speaker, Gareth, will illustrate this story through a tutored tastings of British cheeses, whose heritage and style represent the three eras. From tasty crumblies, to cheddars and stilton, to soft, fresh and oozy cheeses.

The cheeses will be paired with wine, cider or beer and the tasting is designed to serve as a light meal and includes breads and accompaniments. Attendees will be offered a 10% discount to use in our shops or in our online shop valid for one month. As alcohol is served, all attendees must be over 18 years of age.

Gareth Hewer studied History and Philosophy at university and joined Neal's Yard Dairy in 2014. He has worked predominantly in retail, and is the author of the 'Little History' series, which explores the history of some of Britain's most traditional cheese styles and has inspired this cheese class. Gareth's has also worked with our cheese maturing team and is now leading some maturation experiments on Cheshire to explore how the textures and flavours develop with ageing.
